India Compulsory Registration Scheme
Gain product approval for your electronic and IT products.
Before they can gain market access for particular electronic and IT products, manufacturers and suppliers must comply with compulsory Indian regulations and standards to prove high levels of safety and quality. To gain certification, manufacturers and suppliers are faced with the challenge of finding a locally-based representative that provides high quality market access services.
The Department of Electronics and IT (DIETY) requires mandatory certification for 30 electronic products, including power adaptors for IT equipment, audio video and similar electronic apparatus, as well as mobile phones and smart card readers. This is regulated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), under the Compulsory Registration Scheme. The Compulsory Registration Scheme requires that electrical and electronic products, whether imported or manufactured domestically, are tested to the relevant standards at BIS accredited laboratories in India. Conformity to the standard is ensured through testing of samples.
All foreign manufacturers of regulated electrical and electronic products who intend to export to India are required to obtain a BIS product certification license.
Without registration, manufacturers cannot legally supply to the Indian market, with fraudulent and unauthorised use considered a violation of the law punishable under the BIS Act.
How can you prepare for the Compulsory Registration Scheme?
In order to achieve certification, you must first choose a local representative to work with and then have tests conducted by an in-country, recognised laboratory. Registration is achieved by successfully demonstrating compliance to the DIETY requirements, using a testing laboratory recognised by BIS and accredited by the Indian National Accreditation Bureau of Laboratories (NABL) to ISO 17025.
